Sugar cane

 Yep, sugar cane.
Grown in our own yard.
I think I planted it around the beginning of last summer. I got a small stalk from a friend.
It is now taller than us.
A few weeks ago, we decided it was time to see if it was sweet.
We cut one cane and stripped off the leaves.
It was sweet, very fibery, but sweet.
We won't be able to make actual sugar because that process is pretty intense (see here) and requires chemicals. And an ox.

Popcorn Balls

We were lucky enough to receive the coolest package the other day; a popcorn ball decorating kit from Aunt Kathy and Uncle Al (thanks!).
What could be better than decorating with candy? Not much.
I made an owl.
Mae made a little guy with a top hat.
And here's Lucy's little 'weird girl' (her words). Cute, isn't she?

Sugar & Tomatoes (and a new desk)

Not together silly!

Sugar had her babies while we were on vacation, so we missed the birth and new-newborn stage. But playing with two week old kittens was good enough for us. There are three and they are all very cute. She is a mellow mom and didn't mind us handling her babies. I think she was glad to see us again. I can't wait until she and a kitten come home. I'm leaning toward the tabby one.
Yikes, there were a lot of tomatoes ready to be picked when we got back. My helpers and I gathered as many as we could. And then we snacked and snacked. And then we took tomatoes to school and work. And then we did it all again. And again. I love harvest time! The yellowish-green ones in the lower left corner are very unique. I cannot remember what they are called, (green grape maybe? here are a bunch of green tomatoes) but they taste almost smokey. I like 'em.
And finally, the new desk we ordered way back in May arrived last weekend. I found it at Cottage Chic in Aberdeen, NC. I love it!

Drywall & kittens

Here it is. 2400 lbs of drywall. Luckily, we are having a real drywall crew come in and do this for us this time. They unloaded it and carried this pile upstairs (there is another equally large pile in the garage below). We did all the drywall in the house before we moved in, and it was really a terrible job. Heavy, dusty, muddy, slow, precise, I could go on and on.
Here is our Sugar-mama (green due to the corrugated plastic ceiling over her enclosure). She looks mildly irritated that I am taking her picture, but she was happy to see us today and we her. Hopefully, her kittens will come in the next few days. We got our fill of kittens anyway. There are about 4 litters waiting to be adopted.

The kids loved visiting with all the playful, soft, cuddly, sharp-clawed kittens. We stayed for nearly an hour. They will both go back and volunteer at resqcats in the future, probably as soon as we get back from the lake.

It is amazing that we leave empty handed each time. Believe me, it is not easy. These guys are so adorable.

Sunflowers & Sugar update

Yay! They've started blooming. I love how one of the littlest ones was the first to pop open.
Speaking of popping, Sugar is about to have her kittens. We have temporarily given her to an amazing woman who takes in stray cats and kittens. Her website is here. We decided that having Sugar at our house wasn't a good idea during the kitten phase, especially since we were going away for a few weeks. So resQcats will take care of her and be responsible for finding good homes for her kittens. This has been a huge relief to me. The more we thought about having kittens at our home, the more it became clear that we are not currently able to properly care for them. We just don't have a safe, contained space. So, after Sugar has her kittens, weans them, and gets spayed, we will bring her back home and maybe one of the kittens, too. In the meantime, we visit her once a week. She is doing very well. We can't wait to see her babies!

Sugar

We've been adopted by this lovely cat. She comes up to the house for food three times each day. Henry and Mae take care of that with great care and enthusiasm. She still sleeps outside, but she is more and more comfortable inside everyday.

She has beautiful blue eyes, but she refuses to look at the camera. Hopefully someday I'll get a good shot of her pretty face. We call her Sugar.
